Business purposes
firearm training

The business purposes unit standards are geared towards people who will, through the application of the current legislation; handle and use a firearm within a business environment. This may include security personnel, armed response guards, personnel working in gun-shops, casinos or airports where firearms must be booked in for safe-keeping or repair work etc. Anyone wanting to apply for a dealers competency or a competency to trade in firearms/ammunition must have completed the business purposes unit standards.

This course teaches a higher level of proficiency than the basic course and is a requirement for security personnel and members of official institutions. This course focuses on a high standard of shooting and includes holster-work, dealing with malfunctions and shooting against time limits.

All our course fee's includes training manual, range fee,
firearms, ammunition, ear, eye protection and targets.

Students can also use someone they know firearm and ammunition or their own.

When you book your course, you will have to collect your training material in advance.  There is an open book test in the training manual which needs to be completed before the course takes place.  All the answers can be found in the training manual.  When you attend the course, the instructor will work through the content in the training manual with you and then take you through the practical side of safe firearms handling and use.  You will be expected to complete a closed book exam based on the same questions that were contained in the open book exam.  Passing the open book, closed book and practical exam qualifies you for the Unit Standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard applies to persons who will, through the application of knowledge of the current legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a handgun for business purposes.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the handgun.

  • Operate a handgun in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of handgun use under adverse conditions.

Before attending the class the learner need to work through the training manual and complete the open book exam in the manual.

​

All students who apply for this unit standard must first have completed the basic handgun unit standard.

Handle and Use a Shotgun for Business Purposes (123514)

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard applies to persons who will through the application of knowledge of the relevant legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a shotgun for business purposes.

Benefit to society of this unit standard is that law enforcement personnel from both the private and public sectors will contribute to safety in society.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the shotgun.

  • Operate a shotgun in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of shotgun use under adverse conditions.

Before attending the class the learner need to work through the training manual and complete the open book exam in the manual.

All students who apply for this unit standard must first have completed the basic shotgun unit standard.

Handle and Use a Manually Operated Rifle or Carbine for Business Purposes (123519)

This unit standard applies to persons who will through the application of knowledge of the current legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a rifle or carbine for business purposes.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the manually operated rifle or carbine.

  • Operate a manually operated rifle or carbine in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of manually operated rifle or carbine use under adverse conditions.

This unit standard applies to persons who will through the application of knowledge of the relevant legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a rifle or carbine for business purposes.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.

  • Operate a self-loading rifle or carbine in a business environment.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the self-loading rifle or carbine.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of self-loading rifle or carbine under adverse conditions.

Before attending the class the learner need to work through the training manual and complete the open book exam in the manual.

​

All students who apply for this unit standard must first have completed the basic self-loading rifle or carbine unit standard.

COMPETENCY TESTING: MANDATORY YEARLY REFRESHER TRAINING FOR SECURITY OFFICERS.

This course is a refresher course for security personnel. The purpose of this course is to ensure that security officers issued with firearms undergo at least one proper practical training and theoretical briefing session every 12 months. As per the amended regulation of 2004.

AMENDMENT OF THE FIREARMS CONTROL REGULATIONS, 2004: The Minister for Safety and Security hereby, under section 145 of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000) amends the Firearms Control Regulations, 2004, published in Government Notice R.345 of 26 March 2004 to the extent set out in the Schedule.

As a registered Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) Officer, and working with a firearm in the industry (Armed Guard, Armed Response Officer, Cash-in-Transit Officer, Close Protection Officer, etc), you are compelled to prove your firearm competence in the respective categories annually. This means that you must undergo a theoretical and law discussions, be tested by a registered and accredited Professional Firearms Training Council (PFTC) Training company and/or registered and accredited trainer.

Regulation 21 Outline:

  • Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000 applicable to possessing a firearm

  • Section 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act, Act 51 of 1977;

  • Firearm Safety

  • Firearm Knowledge

  • Ammunition

  • Regulation 21 Theoretical Examination

  • Observation Checklist & Qualification Shoot (Business Purposes)

To do your regulation 21 you must have already done your basic and business purposes training.
